Degree Courses offered in English

The Institute for the Liberal Arts (Liberal Arts Program)

The Institute for the Liberal Arts, established in April 2011, offers a distinct interdisciplinary program across six faculties (Faculties of Letters, Social Studies, Law, Economics, Commerce, and Policy Studies).
The Liberal Arts Program enables students to obtain a degree (Bachelor’s Degree in Liberal Arts) by taking subjects taught entirely in English. The program provides a well-rounded education across a range of Japan-related areas, including Japanese society, culture, economy, business, law, politics, policies and international relations, and also offers firsthand experiences of the rich and unique culture and industries of Kyoto. Information and communication skills are also an area of focus. Our innovative liberal arts programs, set in Kyoto, Japan, prepare students to acquire interdisciplinary and global perspectives to help them to become engaged members of the international community. To meet the various needs of students, the program is divided into three concentrations of study: Japanese Society and Global Culture, Japanese Business and the Global Economy and Japanese Politics and Global Studies.

International Science and Technology course

The International Science and Technology course, established in September 2010, offers interdisciplinary programs through active collaboration between the Graduate School of Science and Engineering (Engineering Information and Computer Science, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Applied Chemistry, and Science of Environment and Mathematical Modeling) and the Graduate School of Life and Medical Sciences (Life and Medical Sciences). Its basic idea is to provide students with Japan’s world-leading expertise in the areas of science, engineering and life science, and equip them with Japanese-style research techniques, technology management and language proficiency, giving them an opportunity to assume a leading role on the international stage in the future. The course also aims to foster experts in science and technology with high ethical standards based on Doshisha’s long-held belief in the ‘education of conscience’. In response to the diverse intellectual interests of international students, the course offers substantial specialized programs conducted in English, as well as elective courses on Japanese language and culture. It is possible for students to obtain a degree by taking courses taught only in English, while those who are proficient in Japanese language can also take specialized courses, furthering their knowledge and technology skills to a level applicable to Japanese industry and society.

Graduate School of Global Studies

Established in April 2010, the Graduate School of Global Studies is a new graduate school that has inherited and enhanced the characteristics of education and research undertaken by the previous Graduate School of American Studies. The school comprises three clusters of academic disciplines: American Studies, Contemporary Asian Studies and Global Society Studies. The ultimate goal of these clusters goes beyond regional studies to provide a theoretical and practical clarification of common problems faced by all human beings, as well as contemporary issues that should be examined across national boundaries from diversified perspectives. By implementing education and research focusing on both humanities and social sciences, the Graduate School of Global Studies aims to prepare students with a broad vision, high awareness of problems, logical thinking and a practical problem-solving ability so that they will become highly qualified professionals, educators and researchers who can utilize their interdisciplinary and comprehensive abilities for the benefit of people and society in today’s diversified global society.

* Students enrolled in the clusters of American Studies and Global Society Studies can complete the degree by taking classes taught in English.
